Understanding Driving Licences
In India, there are two main types of driving licenses:
- Learner’s Licence (LL): This is a provisional license that allows you to practice driving under supervision. It’s valid for six months and can be renewed for another six months if needed.
- Permanent Driving Licence (DL): This is the full license that authorizes you to drive independently. To obtain a permanent license, you must first have a learner’s license and pass a driving test.
Eligibility Criteria
Before starting the online application process, ensure you meet the following criteria:
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 16 years old for a learner’s license for a motorcycle without gear and 18 years old for a learner’s license for a geared motorcycle or car. For a commercial driving license, the minimum age is 20 years.
- Medical Fitness: You must be physically and mentally fit to drive, as per the standards specified by the Motor Vehicles Act.
- Knowledge of Traffic Rules: You must have a basic understanding of traffic rules and regulations.
Documents Required
- Proof of Identity: Aadhaar card, Passport, Voter ID, etc.
- Proof of Address: Aadhaar card, Passport, Voter ID, Utility Bill (not older than three months), etc.
- Proof of Age: Birth Certificate, 10th class mark sheet, Passport, etc.
- Passport-sized Photographs: Recent passport-sized photographs as per the specifications.
- Learner’s Licence (for Permanent DL only): If applying for a permanent license, you must have a valid learner’s license.

Online Application Process
- Step 1: To start the online process visit Sarathi Parivahan Website.
- Step 2: Choose “Driving Licence Related Services“, under “Online Services,” and select this option.
- Step 3: A new page opens here select your state and RTO from the options.
- Step 4: Select Application Type:
- New Learner’s Licence: If you do not have a license.
- New Driving Licence: If you have a learner’s license and want a permanent license.
- Step 5: Follow the instructions and click ‘Continue’ to proceed and enter the required details.
- Step 6: Complete the application form and upload scanned copies of the required documents in the specified format and size.

- Step 7: After completing the application you need to schedule your driving test. Choose a suitable date and time slot. This can be done by clicking on Appointments.
- Step 8: The last step left is to make the payment online using the available payment options.
- Step 9: Visit the RTO on the scheduled date with your original documents and the fee receipt. After clearing the driving test, your permanent driving license will be issued.
Tracking Application Status
- Step 1: Visit the Sarathi Parivahan website and go to “Application Status.”
- Step 2: Enter your application number, date of birth, and captcha to view the status.
Note – If you have applied for a learner’s license, you can receive it on the same day and start learning to drive immediately. However, if you have applied for a driving license, you will need to take a driving test, and after passing it, your permanent driving license will be issued.
