Types of Driving Licences in India
- Learner’s Licence (LL): The first step in the process, allowing you to learn driving under a licensed driver’s supervision. It’s valid for six months, providing ample time to practice and prepare for the permanent driving licence test.
- Permanent Driving Licence (DL): Grants the official permission to drive independently. Various categories are available, each for different vehicle types:
- Motorcycle With Gear (MCWG): Permits you to ride motorcycles with gear shifters.
- Light Motor Vehicle – Non-Transport (LMV-NT): Covers personal vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and SUVs.
- Transport Vehicles: For driving heavy commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. Requires additional qualifications and a specialized test.
- Commercial Driving Licence (CDL): Necessary for professional drivers of heavy commercial vehicles. Requires specialized training and a more stringent test compared to the standard DL.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Translates your Indian DL for driving in countries that recognize the IDP. It is valid for one year and cannot be renewed, requiring reapplication for continued use abroad after expiration.
